            The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) is an autonomous body that oversees the Class 10 (Madhyamik) and secondary-level examinations for schools across West Bengal. It was established in 1951. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) is the state government's autonomous examining body for Class 10 secondary education in West Bengal, India, and is responsible for conducting the Madhyamik exam. Established in 1951 and operating under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education Act-1963, the WBBSE administers the Class 10 examination, which is a significant educational milestone following primary education.

Key functions of the WBBSE

  • Curriculum Development: The WBBSE designs and periodically updates the syllabus and curriculum for students from classes 6 to 10 to meet state and national educational standards.
  • Textbooks: It develops and distributes textbooks and educational resources to ensure uniform and high-quality teaching standards in affiliated schools.
  • Madhyamik Examination: The board conducts the annual Madhyamik Pariksha for class 10 students, including setting papers, managing exam centers, and declaring results.
  • Affiliation: The WBBSE affiliates secondary schools across West Bengal and monitors them to ensure adherence to academic standards.
  • Support Services: It also conducts supplementary examinations for students who are not satisfied with their results and provides options for re-evaluation. 

Overview of the Madhyamik Pariksha (Class 10)

  • Exam Schedule: The exams are typically held annually in February. 
  • Subjects: Students are examined in seven compulsory subjects: First Language, Second Language, Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science, History, and Geography.
  • Marking Scheme: Each subject is worth 100 marks. For most subjects, this includes 90 marks for the written exam and 10 for an internal assessment. The exam duration is 3 hours and 15 minutes, with the first 15 minutes for reading the paper.
  • Grading System: A grading scale determines the division a student receives:

  1. First Division: 480 marks or above.
  2. Second Division: 360 marks or above.
  3. Third Division: 272 marks or above
