            The National Institute of Open Schooling, formerly National Open School is a national level board of education in India, controlled and managed by the Government of India. It was established by the Ministry of Education of the Government of India in 1989. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE). The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), established in 1989 by India's Ministry of Education, is an autonomous organization offering various academic, vocational, and community-oriented courses. It provides education at the secondary, senior secondary, and elementary (Open Basic Education) levels. 


Key aspects of NIOS:-

  • Recognition and Authority: NIOS is authorised to examine and certify learners up to the pre-degree level, and its Senior Secondary Certificate is recognized as equivalent to other senior secondary qualifications by the Association of Indian Universities.
  • Structure and Reach: NIOS operates through a network of departments, Regional Centres, Sub Regional Centres, NIOS Cells, and over 7400 Study Centres.
  • Largest Open Schooling System: NIOS is the world's largest open schooling system, with a significant number of learners.
  • Learner-centric Approach: NIOS offers flexible programs including no upper age limit, subject choice flexibility, self-learning materials, credit transfer, and flexible examinations.
  • Courses and Programs: NIOS offers Open Basic Education (equivalent to classes III, V, and VIII), Secondary (Class X), Senior Secondary (Class XII), Vocational Education, Life Enrichment Programmes, and a D.El.Ed. course. Vocational courses cover areas like IT, beauty culture, and various technical fields.
  • Admissions: Admissions are online with two cycles annually. Minimum age for secondary is 14 and for senior secondary is 15.
  • Examinations: Public exams are held twice a year, and On-Demand Examinations (ODE) are available throughout the year, excluding public exam months.
  • Results: Public examination results are usually announced seven weeks after the exams and can be checked online.
